Zenit St Petersburg boss Andre Villas-Boas has slammed Torpedo Moscow
fans after they yelled racist chants at his Brazilian star Hulk.
The former Chelsea and Tottenham boss was disgusted at the racial abuse
that his player had to go through during the game, saying that the
image of Russian football is in tatters because of this.
“The game was a disgrace. There was bad football, bad supporters because of the insults to Hulk,” he said, as quoted by The Mirror.
“The insults, the racist insults to Hulk, they go around the world and this is the image of the Russian Premier League.”
Hulk also spoke on the incident, saying that not giving the fans too
much attention is the best way to deal with it – adding that football
should be bringing all racial groups together, not dividing them.
“What can you do in those situations than just react with a smile? If I
react to the fans with respect, then maybe I'll get the same in
return,” he said.
“I can only just feel sorry about what happened and call all football
fans to respect the game, the players and keep everything in a good
tone.
“Football should unite people, and not divide them up for different reasons.”
The 28-year-old has scored 14 goals in all competitions for the Russian side, while he’s assisted 13 in 33 appearances.
