Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal says Wayne Rooney will
motivate his side to beat Arsenal in the FA Cup on Monday night.
The Dutch coach says that the experienced England international, who
has played 100 times for his country, will lead by example against the
Gunners on Monday night as he wants to add an FA Cup trophy to his
personal cabinet.
“I don't know how Rooney will motivate the dressing room but I think he
shall do that because he is very motivated as a captain and a player,”
he told ESPN.
“He wants to win a title, he has not won the FA Cup and that is something that is missing.”
The 29-year-old Rooney also gave his thoughts ahead of the
all-important fixture, saying that he hopes Manchester United will beat
Arsene Wenger’s side, and make it to the final - as they haven’t played a
domestic cup final in a few years.
“It's exciting for us. These big games here, you want to be part of them. The FA Cup quarter-final is massive for us,” he told ESPN.
“We haven't been to a cup final for a few years and we want to try and win the competition, so I'm looking forward to that.”
The last time United reached the final of his competition was when
Chelsea beat them in 2007, when Didier Drogba’s goal gave Chelsea the
win.
Rooney is the team’s top goal-scorer this season with 11 goals in all
competitions from 24 games - with one of those goals coming in the FA
Cup.
