FC Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi managed to cut down a massive
13-goal advantage by Cristiano Ronaldo in the race to become La Liga’s
top goal-scorer.
Following his fifth league hat-trick of the season, Messi has drawn level with Ronaldo in a heated battle for the Pichichini.
Both superstars are now tied on 30 La Liga goals, but while most of
Ronaldo’s goals came before Christmas, Messi has scored 15 goals since
the turn of the year.
In fact, in November Ronaldo had scored 20 goals for Real, while Messi
was sitting on only seven strikes for Barca - a difference of 13 goals.
But following Ronaldo’s dip in form and Messi’s resurgence to his best,
the Argentine is now likely to outscore the Portuguese if he continues
his current run in form.
However, Messi’s numbers go beyond the best goal-scorer race. The
27-year-old also became the first players in the history of Spanish
football to score 40 goals or more in six successive seasons.
He has scored 315 goals since 2009 and has beaten Pele’s 52-year-old record for the most goals in six straight campaigns.
In addition, his hat-trick broke Ronaldo’s La Liga hat-trick record as
well as Telmo Zarra’s all-time hat trick record in Spanish football.
